Sholl – Kitchen
CLIENT BRIEF
Our clients came to us wanting a Coastal Barn home to enjoy and for their children to grow up in. The kitchen was a large part of this renovation where the clients wanted a space that truly was the heart of the home, where the family would spend most of their time, to cook, eat, entertain, work, play and relax.
Requests:
- Utilising the room better, extending the size of the kitchen to fit the room.
- Large island bench, no need for dining table due to undercover alfresco seating area.
- More bench space.
- Coastal barn style, that is light and bright with elements of brass.
Before
Previously this large room had the kitchen squished into the corner with a small island bench. It lacked bench space around the cooktop and did not utilise the room to its potential. Although there was lots of under bench storage, these drawers were small in width only allowing one dinner plate in the entire drawer.
There was a corner display unit that wasn’t used often and became wasted space. The existing walk-in-pantry was poorly laid out with open shelf storage that butted into the tall cabinets and an opening for the fridge that only allowed the fridge to open 90 degrees.
After
Our design utilises the full room, repurposing unused space for a workable area or storage. In the centre of the kitchen is a large island bench that features white V Groove panelling with cabinetry on three out of four sides to maximise storage. This doubles as the dining table, as there was a fully undercover and sheltered alfresco table setting for larger meals.
Feature Oven
The oven was one of the features of this kitchen, the Falcon Classic Cooker sits flush with the benchtop and grounds the centre of the room. We built in the uprise behind the oven so that it can sit against the uprise rather than recessed back to the wall which would then mean the cabinetry and benchtop would need to be recessed back behind the pillars that frame the space. As we were able to bring the oven forward, this also meant that we were able to make the overhead cabinets deeper to 500mm for plenty more storage.
Walk-In-Pantry Reconfiguration
For the pantry, we wanted this to be an extension of the kitchen that hosts plenty of storage, the fridge and extra bench space. In this room, we stripped out the old layout and completely started from fresh with under bench storage, including base cabinets, a custom fridge recess with overhead cabinetry. We also incorporated open overhead shelves showcasing the V Groove panelling on the wall and finished off with beautiful brass detailing in the shelf support pin and sleeve.
Storage and Hidden Charging Stations
On the side wall we placed the sink, an integrated dishwasher, floating overhead shelves and plenty of under bench storage. One of the bottom drawers actually acts as the electrical hideaway location for the internet modem, chargers and electrical cords. We also placed GPOs with USB ports around the kitchen for easily accessible charging stations. The benchtop uses our signature 10mm overhang, which allows for more space to walk through and still tucks away the handles.
Material Details
For this design, the materials that we recommended include a porcelain marble look benchtop that continued as the vein-matched splashback. Care was taken in ensuring the grout colour matched the different tones of the marble pattern, using darker grout inside the vein and lighter grout as the base colour. These porcelain panels complimented the brass hardware and V Groove panelling perfectly within the Coastal Barn style. The dark timber adds warmth to the space, and grounds it to the wooden floorboards.
In all of our designs we ensure that we pay full attention to even the smallest of details. In this kitchen, we’ve brought the porcelain splashback down to the skirting boards, rather than painting those sections. This can be seen best between the sink cabinetry and the pantry entryway. We also vein-matched the tiles on the splashback, including the return around the window reveal. It’s the finer details that can make all the difference
